Chapter 15

Radhi left the pantry and walked towards her desk feeling sorry for the young man, but she believed this was the kindest thing she could do for him. She had given him an opportunity to come clean without getting the police involved. To her, his behaviour seemed guilty, but guilty of what? She couldn’t quite picture him as a murderer. Or for that matter, as the sender of those tarot cards. Unless . . . unless . . . he was working on the behest of someone else. Radhi’s pulse quickened at this new idea, which not only seemed probable but fit in much better with the impression she’d formed of the young man. He could easily be the one delivering the tarot cards. He came in to work earlier than anyone else. It would be a simple matter for him to leave the tarot cards on Sarla’s and Kiran’s desks when he cleaned their cabins.

Movie today? 6 p.m. at INOX. The Lost Daughter. Nishant’s message snapped Radhi out of her deliberations and made her smile. It’s got two strong female characters talking about their FEELINGS for two whole hours. You’re going to LURVE it!

Radhi typed back: That sounds tempting! I would’ve loved to but I can’t! Am supposed to be working this evening. :(

She was supposed to accompany Sarlaben to Bhavana’s house that evening. Sarla would have gone on without her but the part of Radhi that was irresistibly drawn into other people’s problems wanted to go too.

Oh, and I almost forgot. I’m going on an arranged date!

Huh? Nishant typed back.

For work. I’m going to meet a guy the arranged way so that I can write more authentically about it.

Radhi could see the three dots that indicated that Nishant was typing, but when the reply didn’t come for several minutes, she wondered if she should call and explain. She was about to dial his number when her phone pinged again.

How about meeting tomorrow night then, for dinner? Also, on Monday a friend has come down from the US and a bunch of us are meeting for drinks. I would love for you to join.

He had chosen not to comment on her arranged date, which could either mean that he didn’t think it was a big deal, or that it had bothered him but he didn’t want to raise it. But Radhi didn’t have the chance to clarify — his message had thrown her into another quandary. She wasn’t ready to meet his friends or get involved in his life in any serious way. She’d said so to him on their very first dinner date. Things between them had already become more intense in the last few days, but that was as far as she was willing to go. She didn’t have the courage yet to stake more than she already had.

C’mon, Radhi, it’s just a few drinks. It doesn’t mean anything, Nishant messaged again, guessing correctly why Radhi was taking time to reply.

Okay. Radhi typed back taking a deep breath.
